Tunisia is a country high in human development. According to the United Nations, in 2013 their ranking out of 187 countries was at number 84. Their life expectancy increased from 1980 until 2012 by 12.6 years and there was an increase to their average number of years in schooling from 4.5 years to 6.4 years. in 2011 political instability began straining the economy of Tunisia. Fifteen percent of their workers are now unemployed and in several western and rural areas three-quarters of the population is unable to afford food. Despite this Tunisia has opened their borders to over 1 million refugees from Libya even though it caused a strain on their resources.
Islamic Relief USA is one of the organizations helping the people of Tunisia. They are providing classes for the people in science, mathematics, Arabic, geography, and history in an environment that is safe. Through their dedicated work with the regions Ministry of Agriculture they have rehabilitated 222 greenhouses with the use of iron bars, plastic sheeting, fertilizers, and seed to help 77 farmers feed the people of Tunisia. Due to the notable efforts of Islamic Relief, 67 families have received young calves and goats to rear as livestock. Twenty young women have completed their training in tailoring and were given sewing machines and necessary supplies. An additional 22 women were trained in handicraft weaving and were given crafting supplies and 13 young men finished their training in electrical or plumbing services and have been given a toolkit to begin their work.
